Melting protects delicate shoots in the summer

Pink goat's-eye primroses bloom at the foot of the Briksdalsbreen glacier, coloring the landscape with soft shades. Among the high-altitude adapted species, you can also see the glacier sundew and the red herring, which struggle their way between the rocks and the moraines. Here, nature shows the contrast between the mighty glacier and the small-scale but vibrant flora that blooms in the summer sun.

When the snow and ice let go, the landscape opens up – and the melting glacier gives life to the delicate sprouts that await summer. At the foot of the mighty Briksdalsbreen we find a flora that almost seems unreal considering the harsh surroundings.

Here, between the rocks and the moraines, small mountain plants push forward. They have a short growing season, but great will. Small flowers in white, yellow and purple shine against the gray stone landscape, like small signs of hope and vitality. The glacial water that flows down the valley brings with it nutrients and makes the soil moist and alive.

There is something very special about the contrast: the cold, blue ice looming in the background – and the soft, colorful flowers bending in the summer sun. This is how nature in Briksdal reminds us that even where conditions seem harsh, life finds a way.
