OLDEDALEN

Of the three short fjord arms at the head of Nordfjord, the southernmost ends in Olden, a gem in Nordfjord. Here, the beautiful Oldedalen valley stretches about 20 km inland between waterfalls, lakes and mountains with glistening glaciers.

THE NATURE IN OLDEDALEN IS UNIQUE

For over a hundred years, Olden and Oldedalen have hosted thousands of visitors. It is the strong natural experience that makes the place so attractive. Over the fjord tower mighty, ice-covered mountains with cascading waterfalls down to the mirror-like waters within the valley. No wonder this is one of Norway's most beautiful travel destinations.

TOURISTS IN BRIKSDALEN SINCE THE 19TH CENTURY

The first tourists began to come here at the end of the 19th century. These were Englishmen, often upper-class, who had plenty of money and time. From the cruise ships, the "floating hotels" on the fjord in Olden, they set off on a voyage of discovery into the valleys.

THE NORTHERN PLAYGROUND

The English often called Norway "the northern playground", and it was the mountains and glaciers that fascinated them. Briksdalsbreen, which lies furthest in Oldedalen, was then, as now, the big draw for tourists.
